Today I received a beautifully wrapped present in the post. It was just the most wonderful surprise. The golden ribbon wrapped around it made it really special.

As the ribbon lay discarded on the work surface, it made me think of the ribbon that athletes run through as they cross through the finishing line, the one that always ends up lying on the racetrack.

For those athletes, running through that ribbon is their moment of glory, the pinnacle of their success.

But that’s not where their story started. It started months and years ago, with an idea, with a glimmer of hope, with a sprinkling of raw talent. Their journey will have had some fabulous successes it will also have had some spectacular flops.

Each athlete is unique, in skills, talent, drive, expertise and motivation, but they all have one thing in common. They started.

You really don’t have to be great to start, but to be great, you have to start.
